Typically, when we feel pain; we want pain relief. We have been taught that pain relief usually comes from a pill first and then, depending upon the kind of pain, other interventions.
Going back to our definition of pain, we understand that pain is a MESSAGE first and a SYMPTOM second. The pain message is telling us that we have a symptom of a more serious problem that the body wants addressed.
In the case of a traumatic injury, such as an acute sports injury, the patient is first given a pain medication and then, the structural issues that caused the pain are addressed as in the case of a broken bone, torn ligaments, etc. What if, after such an injury, they DID NOT fix the structural issues and simply told you, "Well, even though your broken bone is protruding from your skin, we're not going to do anything about that; just keep taking those pain pills." Certainly, many of us have had injuries that were "fixed" but still have pain. We will get into that kind of pain further on. For now, let's just think about the case where THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE PAIN IS NEVER ADDRESSED.
If the broken bone protruding from the skin is never pushed back into place and reset; intractable pain makes sense. So, it is with many other kinds of pain. We are in pain due to several different ROOT CAUSES that have not been addressed.
It's one thing to have been in a car accident and come away with chronic migraines; it is another thing altogether to have chronic migraines for nor mechanical reason. The second type of migraines has other ROOT CAUSES. But, since Western medicine doesn't understand or address those ROOT CAUSES; the second type of migraine sufferer is left with only the pain pill option.
And, if we are dependent upon ANY KIND OF PAIN REDUCING SUBSTANCE, including natural ones; we will build up a tolerance to those substances and they will become less effective over time. Most pharmaceutical pain medications are highly addictive. These are huge problems for chronic pain sufferers.
If and when possible, the key is to reserve those types of pain reducing substances for special interventions and to not have to use them all day long. If we have to use these substances all day long; there are strategies for preventing tolerance build up. These strategies are limited, however. Thus, the goal is still to approach pain from a more ROOT CAUSE WHOLISTIC basis in order to reserve pain reduction substances for more serious acute occurrences.
This is why we approach chronic pain from the perspective of bringing the body-temple into its highest possible state of wellness and well-being, thus eliminating most ROOT CAUSES of pain AT THE ROOT!
I don't care what your family history is, what you have been told or any of that. I am here to tell you that the body is capable of performing miracles upon itself when it is cleansed, nourished, hydrated and aligned. Maybe we cannot achieve a state of physical perfection, but that is not our goal. Our goal is to improve the overall state of our body to the best of our ability and to expect that many of our chronic pain issues will simply disappear when we do this.
When our body-temple is in a state of vitality and balance, even permanent injuries, genetic proclivities and other sources of pain are brought into their least aggravating state. I am enjoying an extraordinarily high level of function, pain relief and quality of life in exact opposition to what I was told by many well-meaning health professionals, friends and family.
